Claudia Andujar: In Place Of The Other’, was the first major retrospective to focus on the period of works created between the arrival of the photographer in Sao Paulo in 1955, and her first trips into Amazonia in the early 1970s. The exhibition responded to this diverse body of work by developing a variety of methods of display corresponding to 4 distinct collections. The exhibition was held at the Instituto Moreira Salles, a gallery based in a grand modernist house in Rio de Janeiro.
The exhibition is divided into four cores distributed between the five rooms in the Rio de Janeiro institute.
Famílias Brasileiras – presents the daily lives of four families in different social contexts, with images taken between 1962 and 1964. Mounted in the Reading Room, the photographs were presented at a small, intimate scale and held in a series of illuminated vitrines and niches that together construct a narrative of display.
Realidade – this second room holds a series of works developed over a 5 year period in early 1970s as special reports for the magazine Realidade. Images are produced in large format in order to create an immersive environment.
The City & Its Inhabitants – This room held a series of experimental photo essays developed in urban locations in São Paulo, responding to Andujar’s interest in the city and the human figure.
Amazonia – the exhibition culminated in a last set of images taken along the banks of the rivers Jari, Negro and Solimões in the early 70s. Fine tubular steel structures allow these images to be hung freely in space, permitting the viewer to simultaneously view collections or single images.
