The Casa Aberta project is an innovative affordable housing system designed to be sustainable to the point of generating carbon credits through the intensive use of wood as a structural material. Conceived to aid in the reconstruction of Rio Grande do Sul following the recent disaster, the initiative was led by Ana Sarkovas and Dario Guarita Neto, with participation from major companies in the construction sector, including Urbem, ITA Engenharia, Alea, Noah, Dexco, and industry consultants. In just five days, during an immersion organized by Mesa (@mesa.company), the group developed the first building in Brazil to use engineered wood intensively for social housing. Additionally, a management hub was established to promote the Casa Aberta System, an open-source project aimed at expanding sustainable housing solutions across the country.
