The building designed for the Division of Fundamental Sciences is part of the ITA campus expansion plan, which aims to double the number of students in the coming years. It is the first of a series of planned buildings and is part of the so-called Educational Quad, which will also include the large auditorium, another project by METRO Architects, and the new library, designed by MMBB Architects.
The projects for these expansion buildings, carried out in consortium between the firms METRO, Piratininga, and MMBB, are set within a significant architectural context—the campus and building designs from 1947 are by Oscar Niemeyer. Through their implementation, these projects aim to integrate the existing buildings with the new constructions in a complementary way and enhance their mutual uses.
Foram utilizados sistemas pré-fabricados, de montagem rápida, como estruturas metálicas e painéis pré-moldados em concreto, com a finalidade de reduzir prazos e desperdícios em obra. Essas premissas tornaram a construção muito eficiente sem no entanto reduzir a generosidade, leveza e beleza dos edifícios, em busca de uma relação virtuosa com o campus existente.
